Takeda Shingen

Well, this is my third version of Takeda Shingen, and the most accurate.

The banners shown there are all the collection of Uma jirushi de Shingen. From left to right, the Suwa Bonji flag, dedicated to the god of Suwa lake, the famous Sonshi banner, or Fuurinkazan, with the quote of Sun Tzu, the banner Hi No Maru, the oldest of this type in Japan, the Mi Hata banner, very unknown, one of the familiar treasures of the Takeda clan, the Suwa Myojin flag, also dedicated to the gods of the lake Suwa. Last, the Bahyo flag, another familiar treasure, used as umajirushi and war flag on the battlefield. The messenger's sashimono shows a centipede, and was the Mukade-shuu used by the Takeda tsukaiban.

The banners Bonji and Myojin were made in 1542,  after the conquering of the Suwa region for Takeda Harunobu (Shingen). The banners were dedicated to the shinto deities of the Suwa lake, whose workshipping was made by the families Suwa and Takato.

These are the familiar banners of the Takeda clan; the Hi No Maru flag, or of the Rising Sun, the Mi Hata banner and the Bahyo flag. The three ones are a legacy of the Minamoto or Genji clan, the family clan fo the Takeda.

The most famous banner of Takeda Harunobu is the one known as Fuurinkazan, whose real name is Shonshi flag, or "Sun Tzu banner". The flag was used as the personal O uma jirushi of Shingen, but it is problably far later than the access of Shingen to the Takeda clan; it probably appeared during the Kawanakajima battles. The square Sonshi flag came from a description of the battle of Mikata ga hara.
