Evening battle

La tarde del pasado jueves decidimos ir un paso más allá y utilizar el sistema de puntos para diseñar nuestras propias flotas en un combate estándar. Decidimos jugar a 300 puntos, lo que da suficiente empaque a un combate sin llegar a ser multitudinario. La flota española incluyó 6 buques de guerra de I clase, incluyendo al Santísima Trinidad, que posee un perfil diferente apara mostrar su mayor armamento y tripulación, y 13 navíos de línea de III clase, divididos en cuatro escuadras. La flota inglesa, al contar con valores de Dotación superiores, es más cara e incluye 5 buques de guerra, tres de ellos de II clase, y 11 navíos de línea de III clase.

On Thursday evening we played an standard battle using the ship's point value. At 300 points you can have a pretty good battle, not being battle, so we made up ours fleets. Spanish Armada had 6 first rate warships, including the Santísima Trinidad, which have its own profile in order to show its upper gun rate and crew, and another 13 third rate ships of the line, in four different divisions. British fleet counts with less ships because their points value is higher, due to their better crews. It has 5 warships, three of them second rate, and 11 third rate ships of the line.

El despliegue desde el este y el oeste. Al tirar para decidir el viento y la climatología, obtuvimos un resultado de viento de través (que se mantuvo estable toda la batalla), pero de escasa fuerza, lo que limitó mucho el movimiento a lo largo del combate. La flota española, desplegada en dos líneas de zigzag paralelas, adoptó ese despliegue para tratar de optimizar su superioridad numérica y la posibilidad de adoptar varias posibles direcciones según como soplara el viento. Los británicos, más arriesgados, desplegaron en una línea de batalla escalonada. En el despliegue, los barcos deben situarse en contacto, comenzando por un hexágono adyacente al borde del tablero, y no pueden superar en su despliegue la mitad del tablero. Por eso, la línea de vanguardia británica aparece desplegada en dos líneas paralelas, con un hexágono de separación, para poder maniobrar en turnos siguientes hacia uno u otro flanco según cómo maniobraran los navíos españoles.

Deployment, west and east side. In order to decide the wind and meteorology, we obtained crosswind (it last all the battle), but very light, so the movement was slowlier than it used to be. The spanish fleet, in zigzag deployment to catch the wind wherever it blows, try to use its number to outflank the british. The british deploy in a single line, but the ships can not cross the middle of the table during their deployment, so the vanguard forms into a double line. They spec to to move one side or another depending on the spanish evolutions.

En estas dos imágenes puede verse como las líneas se aproximan, muy lentamente. Los pesados buques de guerra apenas podían mover una casilla cada vez, mientras que los navíos de línea se veían muy atrasados por su lentitud. El almirante español tomó algunas malas decisiones a la hora de realizar tiradas de gobierno para poder mover sus barcos doble, lo que al final resultó en el desorden de la línea de combate original, aunque las dos escuadras de la izquierda pudieron reorganizarse en dos líneas paralelas, al final. Los británicos, que prefirieron largar trapo pero avanzar todos de una, pudieron concentrar el fuego de la línea de batalla contra los barcos españoles a babor, que se acercaron desordenadamente, obligados a encajar las andanadas de dos o tres enemigos cada uno, lo que dejó a algunos bastante maltrechos, y sin capacidad de responder al fuego.

With this two pictures it can be seen how the lines get close, very slow. The heavy warships only could move one hex, and were overruned by the ships of the line. The Spanish admiral took some bad decisions moving his ships, and the spanish battle line become a mess, although the left division could form in two parallel battle lines. The british move slow but steady, keeping their line in order, so they could shoot the approaching the port side spanish ships. The spanish right division have to land up to three enemy ships each, suffering heavy damaging, without shooting back.

Al inicio del tercer turno, con la flota inglesa avanzando inexorable para cortar la flota española en dos, y con prácticamente toda la línea haciendo fuego contra los dispersos barcos de la escuadra española de babor, el almirante español, mi amigo Chechu, gritó: "sólo vamos por el tercer turno, mis barcos aún no han abierto fuego, y ya he perdido la batalla!". Incluyo este comentario no por regodearme (me pidió que no lo escribiera aquí), si no porque en ese momento nos dimos cuenta de lo bien que el sistema de juego es capaz de mostrar de una manera perfectamente real el verdadero espíritu de la guerra en el mar.  Según cómo habían evolucionado las flotas al inicio del combate, ya era posible ver claramente quién iba a ser el vencedor. En exacta circunstancia se vieron los comandantes de la flota aliada en Trafalgar, cuando ni siquiera se había iniciado aún el combate, y a la orden de virar en redondo de Villeneuve , todos sabían ya que la batalla estaba perdida.

At the beginning of the third turn, with the british fleet firing at will agains the spanish ships, the spanish admirals, my friend Chechu, cries: "just starting the third turn, my ships haven't shoot yet, and I've already lost the battle!" At this moment we really realized how the rules could reflect the real way of sea fighting. Just like the fleets evolved at the beginning of the battle, we could realized who the winner will be. The same situation would have been occurred during Trafalgar, when all the commanders of the allied fleet just know they had lost the battle even before the battle begun, when Villeneuve order to turn around and face Cadiz.

Durante el turno 3 los navíos españoles de la división derecha pudieron abrir fuego al fin, con tan buena suerte que a los primeros disparos la santabárbara del King George, el buque de I clase a la cabeza de la división británica de retaguardia, saltó por los aires. Al fondo puede verse cómo las divisiones de vanguardia comienzan a superar la línea española de la división izquierda.

During the third turn the spanish right division could fire, with so much luck that the magazine of the King George, the first class warships heading the rear guard division, blew up. Just behind the vanguard and centre divisions overtake the left spanish division.

El fuego se intensificó y los mástiles empezaron a caer cuando la división de vanguardia rompió la línea, dejando solos al Santísima Trinidad y sus dos buques escolta, mientras la división británica de centro batía a los navíos de línea que se habían alejado de los buques. El Sovereign of the Seas, buque insignia de la flota británica, abrió fuego con ambos costados, con tan devastador resultado que el navío de línea San Miguel voló al alcanzar el fuego su santabárbara. Superados por el fuego enemigo, los barcos españoles decidieron pasar al abordaje, ¡pero las tiradas de abordaje fueron tan malas que muchos de ellos resultaron capturados en el contraataque!.

The fire got heavy and the masts started to fell down, when the british front division cut the spanish line, getting the Santissima Trinidad and her scorts isolated from the rest of the fleet. The british flag ship, Sovereing of the Seas, shoot so heavily that the ship of the line San Miguel exploded when the fire take the magazine. The spanish ships try to board the enemies in order to stop the fire, but the throwings where so bad that they were taken in the counter-attack!

Durante el turno 4 y 5 el combate se generalizó. El escaso viento, la aglomeración de navíos y la pérdida de mástiles generó una gran melée en el centro del combate, mientras la división derecha española y las divisiones de centro y retaguardia británicas se enzarzaban en un fiero combate de disparos penol a penol y abordajes. La escuadra británica de vanguardia utilizó su superioridad numérica para rodear al Santísima Trinidad y los dos buques que la escoltaban, sometiéndolos a un duro cañoneo antes de pasar al abordaje.

During turns 4 and 5 the combat generalized. The scarce wind, the ships agglomeration and the masts lost created a big fight in the center, meanwhile the right spanish division and the center and vanguard british division fought a fierce hand to hand combat. The british vanguard division used its numerical superiority to surround the Santissima Trinidad and her scorts warships, firing at them before the boarding.

Al final del combate, la mitad de la flota española estaba hundida o capturada, por lo que tubo que rendirse.

At the end of the battle, a half of the spanish fleet was taken or sinked, and must surrender.
