Evening battle

- - -
On Thursday evening we played an standard battle using the ship's point value. At 300 points you can have a pretty good battle, not being battle, so we made up ours fleets. Spanish Armada had 6 first rate warships, including the Santísima Trinidad, which have its own profile in order to show its upper gun rate and crew, and another 13 third rate ships of the line, in four different divisions. British fleet counts with less ships because their points value is higher, due to their better crews. It has 5 warships, three of them second rate, and 11 third rate ships of the line.

- - -
Deployment, west and east side. In order to decide the wind and meteorology, we obtained crosswind (it last all the battle), but very light, so the movement was slowlier than it used to be. The spanish fleet, in zigzag deployment to catch the wind wherever it blows, try to use its number to outflank the british. The british deploy in a single line, but the ships can not cross the middle of the table during their deployment, so the vanguard forms into a double line. They spec to to move one side or another depending on the spanish evolutions.

- - -
With this two pictures it can be seen how the lines get close, very slow. The heavy warships only could move one hex, and were overruned by the ships of the line. The Spanish admiral took some bad decisions moving his ships, and the spanish battle line become a mess, although the left division could form in two parallel battle lines. The british move slow but steady, keeping their line in order, so they could shoot the approaching the port side spanish ships. The spanish right division have to land up to three enemy ships each, suffering heavy damaging, without shooting back.

- - -
At the beginning of the third turn, with the british fleet firing at will agains the spanish ships, the spanish admirals, my friend Chechu, cries: "just starting the third turn, my ships haven't shoot yet, and I've already lost the battle!" At this moment we really realized how the rules could reflect the real way of sea fighting. Just like the fleets evolved at the beginning of the battle, we could realized who the winner will be. The same situation would have been occurred during Trafalgar, when all the commanders of the allied fleet just know they had lost the battle even before the battle begun, when Villeneuve order to turn around and face Cadiz.

- - -
During the third turn the spanish right division could fire, with so much luck that the magazine of the King George, the first class warships heading the rear guard division, blew up. Just behind the vanguard and centre divisions overtake the left spanish division.

- - -
The fire got heavy and the masts started to fell down, when the british front division cut the spanish line, getting the Santissima Trinidad and her scorts isolated from the rest of the fleet. The british flag ship, Sovereing of the Seas, shoot so heavily that the ship of the line San Miguel exploded when the fire take the magazine. The spanish ships try to board the enemies in order to stop the fire, but the throwings where so bad that they were taken in the counter-attack!

- - -
During turns 4 and 5 the combat generalized. The scarce wind, the ships agglomeration and the masts lost created a big fight in the center, meanwhile the right spanish division and the center and vanguard british division fought a fierce hand to hand combat. The british vanguard division used its numerical superiority to surround the Santissima Trinidad and her scorts warships, firing at them before the boarding.

- - -
At the end of the battle, a half of the spanish fleet was taken or sinked, and must surrender.

Baccus samurai commanders

- - -
This summer I bought some 6mm Baccus samurai figures. I knew the company time ago, but the scale never liked me. Nevertheless, after reading Peter Berry's opinions about his figures in the web, I decided to buy some. To be true, after having some bases I really think that Impetus rules fit very well in this scale.

- - -
The two bases are Takeda Shingen (left) and Uesugi Kenshin (right). The bases are prepared to recreate the IV battle of Kawanakajima (I planned it in 28mm, in 1/72 scale, now in 6mm… where will I finish?). Shingen is surrounded by his maku; Uesugi, charging in front of his hatamoto in order to attack Takeda.

- - -
Banners are the basic of the Takeda hatamoto. Blue, the Fuurin Kazan; red, the Suwa Myojin flag. In white, the Hi-no-Maru, and black, the familiar Takeda banner. Shingen wears a fury helmet made of green stuff to represent his famous armor. Guarding his general, in both sides the samurai wear red sashimono in black, the personal heraldry of Takeda Shingen.

- - -
I'm very happy with the Uesugi Kenshin base, because is the first time I paint him. His heraldry shows the Uesugi colors, although I'm not really sure if Kenshin used his real family heraldry, the Nagano, during Kawanakajima. In both sides, the Dragon banner and the Bishamonten banners can be seen, showing he is in personal command. I tried to paint Kenshin as he is described in the narration of Kawanakajima, but I'm not very sure about the colors. They are bright and brilliant in front of the dark tones of his bodyguard, and I think the result is quite good.

- - -
The battle of Cape Finisterre was fought the 22th of July of 1805, some months before Trafalgar. In fact, this battle was the one who direct the allied navy commanded by Admiral Villeneuve to Cadiz, who, in front of the british menace, decided to fight in Trafalgar.

- - -
Napoleon was planning to invade Great Britain in order to ensure his control under Europe. He used his alliance with Spain to prepare a big navy in order to set sail to the Antiles and menace the british possessions in this territory. After that, the navy was ordered to return in secret and take control of the British Channel. The British Admiralty sent Admiral Calder with a powerful navy which catch the allies close to the galician coast. The battle was fought in a dense fog and a loose wind which avoided an intense battle, because nobody known where the enemy was. This is why the battle is known as the battle in the fog.

Armada Aliada: Argonauta (1); Terrible (2); España (3); América (4); San Rafael (5); Firme (6); Plutón (f1); Mont Blanc (f2); Atlas (f3); Berwick (f4); Neptune (f5); Bucentaure (f6); Formidable (f7); Intrepide (f8); Scipion (f9); Swift-sure (f10); Indomptable (f11); Aigle (f12); Algesiras (f13); Achilles (f14).
Armada británica: Hero (1); Ajax (2);  Triumph (3);  Barfleur (A);  Agamennon (4); Windsor Castle (B); Defiance (5); Prince of Wales (C); Repulse (6); Raisonable (7); Dragon (8); Glory (D); Warrior (9); Thunderer (10); Malta (11).

- - -
When deciding the deployment positions in Paper Seas, the location is taken at the time when the first shoot was shot. Because of fog and bad weather, the ships were very close when the battle begun. The battle lines were very large because both fleets might take several tacking before getting in contact. To represent the particular weather conditions of the battle, the scenary has it own Weather Table were fog is basic. Despite that, our trowings during the battle were lucky enough to have a battle with good wind.

- - -
The british fleet move first, but because of the loose wind and the heavy warships (the british fleet has four II Rate ships), the line could move slowly agains the enemy. In the vanguard, the ships of the line Hero, Ajax and Triumph open fire against the spaniards, leaded by the Squad Leader don Federico Gravina, aboard the Argonauta.

- - -
Because of a lucky shoot, the Argonauta gunpowder magazine exploded, bringing the ship at the bottom of the sea with Gravina on it. It was a great lost for the combined navy. Without Squad Leader, the spanish ship will be more vulnerable to boarding and british fire, because they will not repeat the surrender throwings the ships will need to test.

- - -
Seeing how the gunfire against a single enemy could be devastating, the british vanguard close quarters against the enemy to concentrate the fire of up to three ships against any single enemy. The slow moving of the warships in the fleet cause a hole in the line, that another ship of the line try to cover.

- - -
When the slow motion of the british fleet started to became a problem (sailing with light wind, with half of its ships turning into the wind, which made them even slower), Admiral Villeneuve, showing an initiative he sadly never had in reality, order the line to move faster and surround the british line. While the spanish vanguard fight back the british, all the french ships double their moves using the Command throwing. You can see in the picture how the allied fleet lost the battle line in order to advance towards the british rear guard.

- - -
At this point, a lost bullet glance off against the port side banister and hit the camera, so it sadly stop working, and the photografic report finished. In the battle, the allied fleet used its number to impose against the british. Despite their crew superiority, the british fleet couldn't react against the massed attack and at the sixth turn the battle ended with an overwhelming victory of the allied fleet.

 - - -
The game Paper Seas is designed to recreate naval battles during the XVIII century and the Napoleonic Wars. Inside this general intention, the game wants to remark the battles where the Spanish Real Armada fought, although you can also fight the battles of other nations. The name of the game comes because it pretends to be a game were, when having it, you can have everything you'll need to play at the moment, including a paper game matt with hexes. The battles would not be "random", but there would be Battle Reports in which you can play an important historical battle. Every Battle Report would have its own box, where you can find the special rules and all what you need to play. In this aspect, I was inspired by the GMT box games, although the size and the way of playing is like a typical war-game.

- - -
The rules include an introductory Battle Report to prove the rules. The battle recreates the Battle of Saint Mary's Cape, fought in October the 5th, 1804. An spanish frigate fleet commanded by Don José Bustamante y Guerra was attacked by a british fleet, trying to capture the treasure the spanish carry to the continent in order to avoid this money reaching to Napoleon, who was allied with Spain. The battle was known when some year ago the american company Odyssei try to steal the treasure, but it is now in an spanish museum. Here you can see the deployment array of the battle. In Black, the spanish, in order from I to IV: Santa Clara, Medea, Mercedes and Fama. The british in Grey, in order from I to IV: Lively, Amphion, Indefatigable and Medusa.

- - -
The pictures show the deployment. You can see the cards with the ship statistics. The british go first. In the game, every turn equals one hour, so the battle has a duration of 5 turns (from 9.30 to 15.00, the time when the last spanish frigate surrender). The spanish must try to reach the opposite side of the table to scape, while the british must capture all the spanish ships.

- - -
During the two first turns, the british overtake the spanish in order to capture the first ship. You can see the flag above the spanish Fama, showing she's captured. The dice shows the masts she has. The british fire against the sails in order to stop the ship and not harming her.

- - -
Meanwhile the british were capturing the Fama, the other frigates, try to reach safe and sound to Cadiz, overpass the fight, and having and opportunity, surrounded the Lively, gunning at her.

- - -
Here you can see the battle during a fierce melée. After having captured the Lively, the rest of the british fleet fight back the spaniards. You can see several markers in the photo. Each one indicates that the ship has made a difficult manoeuvre, and so they must move one turn before trying another. The spanish have boarded the british Lively, and the british had tacked to overpass the spanish line stern.

- - -
Being surrounded, the spanish frigates preferred to scape and set sail. The decision was hard, because two of their colleagues were heavily attacked, but the spanish player doesn't have any advantage fighting back. The british pursue the spanish, although they have very good throwing and could scape quickly. Lastly, the Indefatigable and Medusa started the persecution against the Medea.

- - -
Damaged and pursued by the british, the poor Medea couldn't do anything. In order to move twice, the ships can have government throwings. The Medea failed them all, but the british passed them, so they were able to overrun the Medea, fire at her and lastly capture her. Despite two spanish ships captured, the battle was a tie, because during the persecution the british didn't rescue the frigate captured at the beginning of the battle. The treasure reached Cadiz!
